‘Hard Rubbish’ was first presented in 2018 as part of a satellite exhibition for the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) ‘Design Week’ initiative. ‘Hard Rubbish’ is a metaphor for today's modern urban society and human condition. We live in a highly processed, disposable world. Obsessed with success and worship of material goods. Growing up in the suburbs of Oakleigh (Melbourne, Australia), Hard Rubbish collection was an annual service provided by the local council. An urban museum of artefacts on the nature strip. The inside had come outside. The world tipped upside down. Some items were placed with care and dignity. Other items tossed onto the lawn without regard to make room for new shiny items.
